CSV, Hyper-V and Backups

Alright.  I was running a single Hyper-V server and doing backups with diskshadow, life was good. Now, I have setup a couple of Hyper-V servers and a Cluster Shared Volume on a Storage server with ISCSI.What about backups? I would have loved to stay with diskshadow but apparently Microsoft felt it wasn’t important to include CSV support in this application.

So I tried Microsoft DPM2010 but found it to be incompatible with USB and ESATA storage devices. I had worked around that using Virtual Disk Images but still felt like the data would be had to get to in the event of a failure. Next, I tried Hyperoo a Hyper-V backup program built specifically, but not limited to, Hyper-V backups. It just so happen to also support CSV and appeared to be using RSYNC to perform its backups. I really liked the application and the support seems to be quite responsive; however currently I’m getting extremely slow transfer rates. I’m currently working threw this with their support team, more on that in another post.

Now what? I still need some flat files that don’t take days to transfer. After pouring over the internet I came up with this. First I have my backup device attached to the primary hyper-v node. Then I found out what the guid was for my CSV. I ran vssadmin list volumes and found the volume with no drive letter attached and copied out to blank note pad. Now lets create a Volume Shadow and mount it and automate it using a powershell script.

Tuesday.ps1:

#set $vsspath
$vssLogpath = “\\?\Volume{48580893-b395-11df-b001-001517e7c001}\”

#use vssadmin to create shadow and grab the name of the snapshot
$vssLogname = ($(Vssadmin create shadow /for=$vssLogpath)[5].split(” “))[-1]

#if you need file access to the snapshot
.\dosdev X: $vsslogname

#### take storage snapshot
Xcopy “X:\Virtual Hard Disks\*.*” “F:\Tuesday\virtual hard disks\*.*” /e /s /y /F /O /X /R /H
#echo Testing 123 ….

#remove
.\dosdev /d X:

#delete created shadow
Vssadmin delete shadows /ALL /quiet

Now to schedule it as a task I created a batch file:

Tuesday.CMD

powershell -command “& ‘./Tuesday.ps1′ “

Now if you don’t have dosdev to mount your shadow you can google it and download it. I create scripts and scheduled tasks for the days I wanted backups. Make sure everything is in the same directory and set your start path to that directory in your scheduled task and you should be good to go. I didn’t come up with most of this its compiled from couple of different forums but I hope this helps someone.

Going to the Chapel

Well those crazy kids did it… Paul and Lynsey got hitched Saturday July 17th, 2010. Below is a link to the playlist of what I personally recorded. Sorry for the wind and bad focus. I will attempt to clean them up at a later date. Also I’m not sure what the hell is going on with youtube playlist but it continues to play the video out of order. Click on the link under the embedded video for HD… And yes I’m the minister!

Moving On…

Well easter is over and I have about all of the videos I captured converted and posted to youtube (check out the links —>). Kayley liked her swing and got lots of great stuff from her grandparents and aunts, uncles. I got a quick nine in Saturday @ Skyland Pines and boy did I suck; time to get out the golf net.

I also finally made the switch all of my computers are now using Chrome. Still has corks but I’m hoping as it matures some of my issues get buttoned up. With the work day almost over I’m going to go home and eat some of my wifes famous sloppy joe.

Take care and hope you all had a good break. PS 2:00min mark on the video below… lol

Tech Changes

This past weekend, at the office, we had a major server crash; it happened to be one of our vmware servers. I spent 20 hours recovering, rebuild and getting the back images going. The nice thing about the crash was we got to start our move from vmware to hyper-v early.

Out of the 5 servers we have virtualized, we have already migrated 4 to hyper-v and what a difference it has made. Things are much faster backups seem easier to perform, and the software just feels alot more stable. First machine I used a tool by DavidB @ VMTookKit to convert from VMDK to VHD, subsequent machines I’ve used SCVMM 2008 R2 tools. Microsoft has a 180 Day Trial which is working great. Not to mention Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 Core is free.

For backups we have been using diskshadow, task scheduler and some scripts loosely based off of John Kelbley’s scripts and Glo Network scripts.

Android and I

I’ve had my motorola droid for about a week. Thus far I have begun to realize windows mobile is way behind the times. I’m thinking about picking up some android programming books. I’ll keep anyone interested posted

Crash Amber

Pretty good week. Had Monday off and took Kayley golfing, for the first time. SNC00095I think she had fun and she did pretty good putting and driving the ball. Played over at EdgeWood on Market in North Canton; it’s a nice 9 hole course kind short but good layout.

Took a trip to Fort Wayne on Thursday for some work related items. Nice trip minus the 3:15AM start time. But got everything fixed up and back in time to pick up the kid before the wife had work.

This weekend was crazy! Went over to Berlin Lake to hang with the family and attend a function Saturday afternoon. At about midnight I was feeling sleepy so decided to head to bed. Well my wife decided to stay up because we had a friend from out of town in. After having to much to drink they miraculously made it back to the camp site on the golf cart in one piece but after that it becomes a little sketchy; but goes something like this. .  . Dan and Amber pull into the 5580_133968590752_680985752_2880526_4286526_ncamp site between 1:30am and 2:00am. Dan heads back to his site and amber sits on the golf cart, feeling to sick to move at the moment. When she finally decides to move she stands up and then passes out onto the gas pedal causing the golf cart to jump the railroad tie, drive over (through) the turkey fryer, and careen into the picnic table and push the picnic table into the deck.  Some time after that she flopped out of the golf cart and into the gravel and feel asleep unit my uncle found her.

At about 2:30AM they, my whole family, woke me up to try to help get her out of the golf cart; she moved to a sitting position from sleeping in the gravel sometime before I got involved. I sort of took one step back after receiving multiple threats, punches and kicks, to getting her backing into the gravel. After some more convincing my uncle and I managed to get her on to the deck where I proceeded to give up and gave her a blanket and a pillow. She remained there the rest of the night until about 7:30AM when she finally crawled into bed.

Now I thought about taking a picture and/or video but decided against it since I want to continue living. But my uncle Jeff decided against life and choose the after life the next time him and amber meet for posting the attached picture to facebook. Sure I’ll catch some aftermath for re-posting it and telling the story but, that’s just another weekend with the Snyder’s.

Sunday was uneventful. Outside of the obivously sick wife. I played golf, went to the grocery store and made homemade zucchini bread.

Weekend Update

Pretty good weekend, and week for that matter. Friday Kayley and I 20687033went to the Belden Foodfest and Balloon lift-off which was very nice. It looked pretty crappy Friday morning so I thought we might get rained out but the weather didn’t let us down.

Saturday night we went to the Lynn Drive-in @ Starsburg. We watched Funny People and Public Enemies. Both were really good movies but Funny People wasn’t what I really was expecting. That’s not to say it was bad in any way just different. Public Enemies was exactly what I was looking for and was just awsome. The only part about that was the drive home @ 2:00AM.

Desktop08022009Sunday. .  . Kayley fell into a huge muddy hole while visiting her horse at the barn. She was carrying her chicken at the time and protected it quite well when she fell. Though she was covered up to her waist in mud it didn’t really slow her down. Hine sight I should have grabbed a picture but she carried right on so I really didn’t have a chance.

As the day comes to an end I finished up by converting some HD camcorder videos and pictures into some dvds. And listened to some Jack Johnson while doing laundry, waiting files to convert and menus to be built for the DVDs.
